If you are in an RV, avoid B11 due to an extremely sloped driveway. Its one of the oldest buildings in this region of the Smoky Mountains and was relocated from the Jakes Creek area to Elkmont. The Middle Prong Trail in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is one of our favorite hikes in the winter. To be safe, carry a rain jacket with you in your backpack at all times and dont leave your rainfly off your tent if you leave the campground for a few hours and its completely sunny with 0% chain of rain in the forecast. The school is another 0.5 miles up this one lane gravel road that you should drive really slow on because there are only a couple of passing spots. Per the campground map, the adjacent A13, A14, and A16, which allow RVs as well as tents, are next to the creek, but only A14 is right on it. Not easy to do in the Smokies most of the time. Wading through the Little River over to the E campsites on the river. 6. From Cherokee, NC: Take Newfound Gap Road (aka U.S. 441) North through the park into Tennessee. We always make sure everyone is wearing hiking shoes now. The turkeys crossing the Little River Road are cool, but our campsite, B21, is right there in the trees on the left side of the road, not 25 feet from it. After a 55 minute car drive, blessedly traffic free, we arrived at Clingmans Dome and were able to hike the trail and enjoy the viewing platform with about 5 other early birds. There are no showers, electric, water, or sewer hook-ups in the park. N7 is actually on the creek. I have been able to buy wood sometimes and sometimes not. GP 03 was also a nice group campsite in Elkmont although you can see GP 02 behind it so not quite as private as GP 04. Ask the campground host for directions to the closest one. Each campsite has a fire ring, picnic table, and tent pad. They dont sell them in the park. Campsites H1, H3, and H5 are on the Little River. B13, B14, and B16 are also private, but they are not on the creek. Campers come back surprisingly late, usually from a day out in nearby Gatlinburg, so road noise can last into the night. Bring soap and toilet paper. So there is still some demolition debris around. When you click on a specific campsite, you will find multiple pictures and the boxes at the top will tell you max length of RV/motorhome that can be parked at that site or if it is for tent only. The Elkmont season is generally late spring to late fall (March/ April/ May thru Oct/ Nov) and you can reserve sites 6 months in advance. Campers on these beautiful wooded sites will have a short walk from their parking area to their tent pad. The only hiccup to this is that they sometimes dont release next years reservations until January or even later. Splashing around in these waters is always a kid favorite. Generator use is prohibited from May 15 through October 31 in loops A, B, L, M and N. You must check-in with the campground office staff UPON ARRIVAL to complete your reservation. Even outside of the official festival, people drive themselves to the Little River and Jakes Creek trailheads to see the fireflies so it can be surprisingly busy even late into the night on the Little River Road during these times. The Little River to Cucumber Gap to Jakes Creek back to Elkmont is a popular 5.6 mile loop trail for longer day hikes without too much elevation change (830 ft). If you walk a little ways up Jakes Creek trail and the Little River trail, you can find the remnants of these vacation cabins that were dismantled by the park in recent years. There are no FCFS sites (first come- first served). I had to drive back to the nearest town where I could get a cell phone signal so I could log into Recreation.gov and find my number. And on some busy weekends in the late afternoon you can hit heavy traffic as people are returning to their hotels from the park so the drive can be an hour or more. Somebody built their daughter a kid-sized play cabin adjacent to the familys cabin in Daisy Town. If you try to make a reservation and the entire campground is booked solid, check back every chance you get because people cancel all the time and the sites immediately go back up for sale. It must finally be fall! Over the past 30 days there have been 3,516 reservation cancellations at Elkmont. And you cant leave your pet unattended so dont stash it in your RV while you go for a hike. Because the last trolley leaves Gatlinburg at 530pm, it is not an option if you want to go out for dinner but great if you want to head over to the Aquarium for the day or just get out of the campground on a rainy day without paying extortionate parking prices in Gatlinburg. None of the tent pads are particularly far from the parking so unless mobility is really an issue, then I would not let that deter you from these sites. I would hike the trails first and then come back to Metcalf Bottoms for a picnic while the kids splash in the river. So look for available sites in the J, K, L, M, and N loops, especially if it is on the outer edge of those loops. Located eight miles from Gatlinburg, Tennessee, Elkmont Campground is the largest and busiest campground in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, making a great place for camping near Nashville. The nearest picnic area is Metcalf Bottoms Picnic Area, west of Elkmont on Little River Road. Quiet hours are in effect from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. After that many of the cabins fell into disrepair. However, all of the driveways are really sloped, so RVers may want to avoid them. Cades Cove is notoriously the busiest area of the Smokies. Campsites F1, F3, F5, F6, and F8 are on the Little River. Sites E1, E3, E5, E7, and E9 are on the Little River. Tent pads are 16 X 16 and you can usually fit 2 medium-sized tents on it. Violators are subject to fines. . The 2023 dates for the official Smoky Mountains National Park synchronous fireflies event will be held June 4th - June 11th, 2023. It has a steep driveway so is tent only but it looks down on the K and L loops below and the driveway blocks the road so no headlights in your face. Elkmont Campground can accommodate tent campers, RVs up to 35 feet long, and other self-contained sleeping vehicles. The Appalachian Club was a private club with a clubhouse and cabins for its members and its remnants are what you see today in this area. Please dont add to the growing collection of trash downriver and bring water shoes that fasten. In order to transport the timber, Colonel Townsend built a railroad that connected the riverside logging site to his companys sawmill in Tuckaleechee Cove. Hiking and fishing are not the only reasons for visiting the Smokies: Picnicking, wildlife viewing and auto touring are popular activities. The park is a sanctuary for a magnificent array of animal and plant life, all of which is protected for future generations to enjoy. This is campsite F12. But you can drive to Gatlinburg (20 min away without traffic) and usually get a good signal, especially if you have Verizon. Located on the Tennessee side of the park, Elkmont is within easy driving of some of the most popular park attractions like Laurel Falls (10 minutes), Alum Cave trail (30 min), and Clingmans Dome (50 min). Bikes are an extremely common way to get around this super large campground so drive slowly and keep in mind kids under 16 must wear a helmet per TN law. Besides just the normal amount of traffic for a campground of this size, you also get people heading to the popular trailheads of Little River and Jakes Creek trails so you get road noise from that too. Visitors with campground reservations that only plan to park at their designated campsite do not need a parking tag. You will need a permit if you are over 13 years old and you can buy those in Townsend, Gatlinburg, or Wears Valley. The terrain at Elkmont is fairly flat, but regardless, all sites have level 16 x 16 tent pads on which to pitch your tent. The nearest dump station is at Sugarlands Visitor Center about 15 min away. The dump and fill station is located approximately 6 miles away from the campground. It is only open Monday through Saturday from 3 PM to 8 PM. The Elkmont Historic District is a fun place to let the kids explore but be careful as one of ours caught a piece of glass in her Chacos and cut her foot a few years ago. RVs are still welcome in these areas. Campsite L 14. We absolutely respect your privacy and do not share email addresses. Food safety is strictly enforced-- no food or even water left at campsite or in tents when not actively cooking or eating. Nor is there WiFi anywhere at the campground. B21, B22, B23, B24 are the best of the bunch here for shade and privacy, and I would skip all of the other B sites. Campsite H1 on the Little River at Elkmont Campground. When the national park was established in 1934, residents had to decide whether they would sell their homes for full value and relocate right away, or they could sell their properties to the National Park Service for a discounted price and get to stay in their homes for the remainder of their lifetime. J16 is technically on the river, but it is so far away that it does not count as being a riverside site. Potable water is available at spigots near each restroom; use of hoses is not allowed. Campsite G7 on the Little River at Elkmont Campground. Reservations which exceed the 14 consecutive day limit may be cancelled and refunded. Lots of room and privacy. All food must be stored in food storage boxes (if provided) or in your vehicle. Or you can park at the picnic area at Metcalf Bottoms and walk the 0.7 mile long Metcalf Bottoms Trail to Little Grienbrier School. Nine of Elkmont's campsites are wheelchair accessible ADA sites. The beautiful Little River runs directly through the center of the campground, offering campers the option of camping next to the river. No but it does have specific sites that are restricted to tent only.. Then you have to circle the parking lot up there for an hour or more until a parking spot opens up. We left the campground at 7am on a July morning, only taking enough time to make coffee, use the restroom, and throw a bunch of granola bars and fruit in the car. The 212-site Elkmont Campground is the largest campground in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and it is popular due to its proximity to both Gatlinburg, Tennessee, and Cades Cove. Due to its central location and variety of amenities, Elkmont Campground tends to be heavily used during the summer vacation months and in October. The park stay-limit is 14 consecutive days. This is a short but pretty (and often overlooked) loop trail adjacent to the eastern half of the campground. on the west side of the campground just over the bridge from the ranger station and are right by the ampitheater. Campsite B25 at Elkmont Campground is the closest walk-in site to the parking lot. You'll turn here until you see the ranger station about 4 miles down the road. Should you choose Elkmont Campground or Cades Cove Campground in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park? If you have a reservation and arrive when the campground office is closed, proceed to your site and register in the morning. You need a minimum of 7 people to use any of the group sites. If you arrive after the office is CLOSED for the day then you must check-in with the campground staff the following day. All Rights Reserved. Elkmont Campground is one of our personal go-to campgrounds in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park because of the great hiking trails you can walk to from your campsite, the picturesque Little River running through the campground, and decently large campsites (if you know which ones to go for). To do so, check the office bulletin board for a list of campsites that are available FOR THAT NIGHT ONLY and pick from one of these. (It is too cold for me at any time of year but the kids like it.) This is an awesome hike with kids because it takes you from Little Greenbrier School to the Walker Sisters Cabin. Even non food items like candles and scented soaps count because bears think they smell super interesting and are curious to know if they are, in fact, food. All sites at Elkmont Campground are open to tent campers. Tennessee state law requires bicycle helmets for riders under 16 years of age. If you want to bring 2 large tents, then make it easier on yourself and reserve 2 campsites. These new passes will help pay for some much needed maintenance throughout the park, including at rest areas and campgrounds. L2 is another of my favorites as it has a ton of privacy even though it doesnt look like it on the map. Metcalf Bottoms is an excellent picnic area and has a trailhead to one of our favorite trails in the park, Little Brier Gap trail. The river sites in G and H loops (on the west side of the campground) can get some road noise from the Little River Road across the river from the campsites. Passes are $5 for the day, $15 for the week, and $40 for a year.
